In the clear, warm waters surrounding the island, a transformation is quietly taking place. At Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi, sustainability is a way of life — a commitment to taking care of the natural world we call home.
Our coral restoration program, developed in partnership with marine biologists from Ocean Group, is an invitation to take part in an environmental movement.
It begins with the careful collection of “fragments of opportunity” — small coral pieces which have naturally become separated from their parents colonies by ocean movement or marine life.
These fragments are placed in floating frames and suspended at optimal depths to encourage regeneration.
The impact is remarkable. Over the course of a year, these fragments grow — branching into colonies, gaining strength and size, and becoming vibrant new habitats for reef fish, damselfish, and other marine life.
Once mature, the corals are gently transplanted to the island’s house reef, secured onto natural rock and coral skeletons. In time, they become part of the living reef — contributing to biodiversity, supporting marine ecosystems, and protecting our shorelines for generations to come.
To date, over 500 fragments have been planted. More than 55 guests, families, and groups have participated in the ongoing effort. Each participant receives updates throughout the year, culminating in a final report when their corals are safely rehomed beneath the waves.
Coral restoration connects our guests not only to the island’s breathtaking beauty beneath the surface but teaches them about the rich, fragile ecosystem that supports it. This is an experience of purpose, guided by care, science, and respect for the ocean.
